Expired air was collected for at least the final three consecutive minutes of the GXT and for 2 min during the verification test and analysed using the Douglas bag technique, using a gas analyser (Series 1400; Servomex Ltd, Sussex, UK) and a dry gas meter (Harvard Apparatus, Kent, UK).

The volume of expired air was established using a dry gas meter (Harvard Apparatus), with the temperature of the expired gases measured using a CheckTemp1C (Hanna Instruments) during evacuation from the Douglas bags.
The expired gas collected by the DBM was immediately measured by the calibrated S-3A oxygen and CD-3A carbon dioxide analyzers and then passed through the dry gas meter whose accuracy (0.8% error) had been previously checked using multiple pumps of a 3-L calibration syringe (Hans Rudolph).
As described by Bird et al. (2008), air flow through each chamber (mean=98.8 l/min) was measured using an AL800 dry gas meter (American Metering Company, Nebraska City, NE, USA) and CH4 concentration (ppmv) measured in incoming and exhaust air streams using an Innova 1312 Multigas Analyser (California Analytical Instruments, Orange, CA, USA).
The volume of expired air was measured with the certified dry gas meter (Shinagawa Seisakusho, Tokyo), and the sample of expired air was analyzed for O2 and CO2 concentrations in duplicate with a Roken-shiki portable gas analyzer (Shimada, Tokyo; a modified Hal-dane gas analysis apparatus that can be used without a supply of electric power).
