By 2001, South Korea will have the capacity to make more than 6m cars, but not much more than half of it is likely to be used, predicts DRI, an American research firm (see chart).This looming overcapacity has already forced car makers to slash prices in South Korea.
Of the three major steelmaking processes basic oxygen, open hearth, and electric arc the first two, with few exceptions, use liquid blast-furnace iron and scrap as raw material and the latter uses a solid charge of scrap and DRI.
