The thymus differs structurally from other lymphoid organs in that it does not have lymphatic vessels draining into it.
The western third is drained by tributaries of the upper Volga River, while the eastern part belongs to the Northern Dvina River basin, draining into it by the Sukhona River.
It occupies the lowest point of the Australian continent (about 50 feet [15 metres] below sea level), and many large river systems drain into it.

A spokeswoman for the Environment Agency said: 'We're satisfied that the main river, which is the Environment Agency's responsibility, has sufficient capacity to cope with water from heavy rainfall draining into it.
