The response of relative growth to increasing temperature was comparable to temporal trends, with increases on moderately drained sites and decreases on well drained and poorly drained sites (Table 3, Fig. 5b).
As atmospheric CO2 had a tight correlation to calendar year (r 2 = 0.97, Additional file 1: Figure S2), trends in both absolute and relative growth, mortality, and net biomass change responses to atmospheric CO2 largely followed those of calendar year although poorly drained sites had significantly lower growth than moderately drained or well drained sites (Table 3, Figs. 4a and 5a).
The shape of the drain flow water table height relationship was found to depend on the selected hydraulic conductivity profile.
Relative growth rates and net biomass change had an initial sharp decline with forest ageing, with the largest declines on well drained followed by moderately drained soils (Table 2 & Fig. 3b).
Several states in the Northwest have complained repeatedly that federal orders to sell surplus power to California have forced them to drain water tables for hydroelectric plants, endangering their own energy resources and potentially damaging the environment.
Both abundance and species richness was higher in pristine sites than in drained sites (Table 2).
Waterlogging had no effect on shoot dry mass compared with the drained control (Table 4).
No statistical differences were observed between platelet counts in the arteria brachialis and efferent draining vein (Table 1; n=15).
However, none of the remaining accessions showed a reduction in the number of nodal roots under waterlogged conditions when compared with plants grown under drained soil (Table 2).
> Nodal roots grown under waterlogged soil tended to be of greater diameter, but only seven accessions (CIAT 16888, CIAT 26181, CIAT 26416, CIAT 6133, CIAT 6707, CIAT 679 and CIAT 26570) showed significant increases when compared with nodal roots of drained plants (Table 3).
