Awaiting visitors to the society's museum galleries will be not only doubled gallery space, an expanded store and a garden court cafe but also three new exhibitions and opening-day activities that begin at 11 30 a.m.
Its houses include late Victorians, raised center-hall cottages and double-gallery town houses with columns and broad front porches on their first and second levels.
It will essentially double the gallery's current space to 20,000 square feet.
That is about double the gallery space in the New Museum of Contemporary Art that opened in New York in early December.
The MOMA has done well: Glenn Lowry, the director, is in the midst of an ambitious fund-raising campaign to finance an expansion that would double its gallery space.
The museum will own its home on Fifth Avenue, which will permit it to build up its permanent collection, double its gallery space and quadruple the educational space.
It was designed by OMA's New York office, led by Shohei Shigematsu, to double the gallery spaces of the museum and get it out of a park and on to the street.
