The bees were trained to solve a basic DMTS task with a set of patterns containing two and three blue dots that were the same as used in the previous training (Fig. 2a), and were then, after they had reached a high plateau, tested on new patterns with randomised two and three dot configurations.
The difference in the results of the two experiments may reveal a difference in the way subjects performed the task; the fixed dot configurations could, in principle, be judged by learning visual patterns or context (e.g. [4]), whereas when the positions were scrambled, subjects had to judge the numerosity (or perhaps density; see General Discussion).
He used Barbier's system as a starting point and cut its 12-dot configuration in half.
Sister centromeres were defined as separated if they displayed a double-dot configuration with at least one signal-width between them.
"It turns out that the process of discovery led us to something interesting with this particular [quantum dot] configuration," he says.

The vague-colored dots represent the configuration of the feet and body-center relative to each other at the beginning of the step (BPbegin, the sharp-colored dots the configuration and the end of the step (BPend).
In non-biological motion, the six dots always formed a straight line, and the distance between adjacent dots was fixed (i.e. the configuration of dots was always shaped as the letter "I").
Each dot corresponds to one configuration state of the group, and its probability is shown for the data (x-axis) and the prediction of the model (y-axis).
If a highly sensitive detection system is used, for instance with a photomultiplier tube in a confocal configuration, both dot transparency and duty cycle can be optimized to maintain the negligible light loss rate.
