Nurses working in intensive care and BMT units all carry pocket cards that give dosing suggestions for commonly used medications in their care areas.
To ensure that the experimental algorithm did not recommend unsafe doses, a nurse read the computer-generated dosing suggestions and then adjusted the patients' insulin pumps.
Results: Adherence to insulin dosing suggestions was high (96.5% bolus, 96.7% basal).
Many studies were excluded because the interventions dealt only with drug dosing suggestions.
In addition, a phase-in period, in which a patient runs their dosing suggestions past a health professional, could help develop patients' skills.
These models could also be used, for example, to make insulin dosing suggestions for patients using SMBG and intermittent subcutaneous insulin administration instead of an insulin pump.
Although it is likely that the current dosing suggestions fit best with the available data set, it is a likely that the current suggestions do not yet fully reflect the interindividual variability in clearance of aminoglycosides in neonates [ 2– 4].
We are, however, intrigued by the dosing suggestions formulated by the authors: 15 mg/kg at 36-h intervals for neonates with a postmenstrual age (PMA) ≤ 28 weeks, 14 mg/kg at 24-h intervals for neonates with a PMA between 29 and 36 weeks, and 15 mg/kg at 24-h intervals for neonates with a PMA ≥ 37 weeks [ 1].
Participants will be required to offer a dose suggestion based on the scenario and their justification for their response; their responses will be compared with the expert authors' recommendations.
The standardized workflow support with the GlucoTab system was highly accepted by healthcare professionals on all participating clinical wards as indicated by the performance of the expected BG measurements and the adherence to insulin dose suggestions (Table 2).
