Anyway, there's one of the undisputed greats of French cinema, 63 years of age, 80-odd films to her name, an actor who has worked with Truffaut and Godard, Pialat, Chabrol and Tavernier, who has won four Césars and been nominated for half a dozen more, bent double, dodging into doorways, dancing from foot to foot on the hot paving stones.
The album works better when they retreat into more esoteric regions, as on The Dreamers, which speaks – in a manner that will reassure old fans – of doorways melting, tapestries dancing and mountains talking.
The early stuff—"Love Me Do" and "She Loves You" and "Help!"—was for swinging on the swing in my bedroom doorway; the White Album was for dancing with my mom; "Sgt. Pepper" was for building forts while she worked at our family's seed company; "Rubber Soul" was for reading Nancy Drew.
Most of all, though, the video focuses on the city's children, dancing and playing in any street, beach or doorway they can find.
"What the heck is this music?" Standing there in the doorway of my South Bronx classroom, watching seventy-plus Black and Latino/a students dancing to the Siam-via-Broadway soundscape of reverberating gongs, pentatonic xylophone riffs and heavily (if inauthentically) Asian-inflected vocals, I try to answer Alethea's question as clearly as I can.
And didn't experimenters in the 60's crack the frame long ago by dancing on the walls and roofs of buildings (Trisha Brown) and in doorways on the street (Lucinda Childs)?
Passing under an arched doorway and peering through a rectangular wall opening, you obtain fragmentary glimpses of Mr. Lassry's still lifes and portraits (and a wall sculpture and a short 16-millimeter film that features dancing wooden eggs).
Performances will include ribbon dancing, handkerchief dancing, sword dancing, lion dancing and Mongolian bowl dancing.
