Fund-management companies in America on average charge 70% more to manage a mutual fund's money than they do a pension fund's, according to Morningstar, the Chicago fund-tracking company.
When they do, a Pensions Regulator determinations panel – which is independent of the investigations team – will rule whether the parties involved should make a one-off payment into the pension scheme, provide on-going financial support, or both.
Only by being filled out with private savings and pensions – whose value is also depressed by low bank rates – does a meagre state pension provide anything close to a tolerable retirement.

"But take care, as if you are doing a large pension transfer, for example, as a one-off transaction, your IFA could be receiving 6% of your fund for just six to eight hours work," says Martin Bamford.
So does a planned raid on pension contributions.

"They've invested in an application that has an initial cost, but over time doesn't expect to have an hourly rate, doesn't expect to have a pay rise, doesn't need a pension.
