The essays draw on an array of documentary evidence from library catalogs, prefaces, title pages and dedications, marginalia, commonplace books, and letters to ink, paper, and bindings to explore individual reading habits and experiences in a period of religious dissent, political instability, and cultural transformation.
In 1997, filmmaker-comedian Gary Roma of Boston produced a documentary about library cats titled "Puss in Books: Adventures of the Library Cat". It was a departure from his previous work, an examination of doorstops.
There are computer-interactive exhibits, dioramas, a children's library, documentary films and live events.
"The essence of the documentary is that libraries were built by the working classes, and belonged to everyone as a symbol of equality and opportunity," she said.
She is co-founder and editor of U.S. History Scene (ushistoryscene.com), which provides open-access teaching resources to thousands of public schools in the United States through partnerships with documentary filmmakers, university libraries, and special collections.
With canny timing, then, Netflix recently added Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci's new documentary, Salam Neighbor, to its library.
The year will also provide extra opportunities for students to try their hand at editing film across the curriculum as the National Archive relaunches its library of documentary and newsreel footage via a new Focus on Film site; its own embedded editing tool enables students to create and save their own films.
