In the last quarter of the 19th century, the German biblical scholar Julius Wellhausen published his documentary hypothesis of the composition of the Hebrew Scriptures.
He reviews the "documentary hypothesis," which demonstrates pretty conclusively that the first five books of the Bible were not written by a single person (Moses, according to tradition), but actually cobbled together from four, or maybe five, different writers.
But there were plenty of Christian leaders who reacted vigorously against the Documentary Hypothesis and all that it implied.
