This month, PBS is airing a documentary called The Gene Doctors that spotlights several emerging gene therapies, including Spark Therapeutics' Luxturna, a treatment for a rare form of blindness that won a unanimous thumbs-up last week from an advisory panel to the FDA.
As well as acting, Nyong'o has also made her own documentary, "In My Genes", about the treatment of Kenya's often misunderstood albino population.
Shadow and Act, an online collective focusing on films and filmmakers of the African diaspora, describes the documentary: In My Genes, follows eight individual Kenyans who have one thing in common: they were born with albinism, a genetic condition that causes a lack of pigmentation.
As well as acting she is also an award-winning film-maker and wrote, directed, and produced the documentary In My Genes, about the treatment of Kenya's often misunderstood albino population.
She made a documentary, "In My Genes," about Africans with albinism, and acted in an African MTV drama, "Shuga," intended to raise awareness about AIDS.

3. The documentary "Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer," will be shown on PBS next month.
