When times are tight, people look for new, less expensive ways to do old things.
David Stern, the N.B.A. commissioner, described Mr. Kroenke as inquisitive and analytical, "as knowledgeable a person as there is" about basketball, an owner "willing to do old things in a new way," but ultimately a man without anecdotes.
The culture of creation includes all the arts, literature, theatre and films (creating stories, entertainment, and alternative realities), and engineering (creating useful things, entertainment and alternative ways to do old things).
You may hear words like "matching grants," "industrial clusters," "patent protection," "venture capital," and "incubators" -- all techniques to put creative people together and give them the cash to do new things, or to do old things in better ways.
But while one data-head says we're dead because we only do old things, many others in the crazy over-heated blogosphere say we're dead because we do too much new and unfamiliar stuff.
Think of new ways to do old things.
But it is not just about doing old things in new ways, it is about doing new things.
"Old people not really doing old things and not really doing young things but just kind of being – I thought that was lovely.
The scientists trying to eradicate diseases such as guinea worm; the volunteers helping refugees; the food innovators finding new ways to feed the world; the visionaries who reject conventional wisdom and come up with different ways of doing old things.
It meant you were someone who could literally hack code down to size and get it to do new things – or stop it from doing old things wrong.
