Instead of just teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tables for students to memorize, Singapore math provides strategies for students to understand why 8 + 4 = 12 by showing them how to regroup the addends to make a group of 10 and a group of 2 and then adding 10 + 2 = 12.
