Relative to dives 40, 41, and 42 (in 2004), dives 87 (in 2010) and 124 (in 2011) showed increases in water depth, but all dives showed depth variations within the dive periods (Figure 3).
Twelve ROV dives (dives 29 to 36 and 40 to 43) were conducted near the epicenters (Figure 1).
During the 2010 cruise, two dives (dives 87 and 95) revisited the slope basin where previous dives (dives 36, 40, 41, and 42) observed both DSL and BTL in 2004 (Ashi et al. 2012).
In the Caribbean and the Pacific coast of Central America, for example, half of all the scuba dives (7.5 million dives annually) are conducted in marine-protected areas.
Data were corrected for surface drift and according to the resolution of the loggers only dives >1 m were considered for analysis.
Also the frequencies of the deepest dives (>80 m) peaked during this period of the year.
In this respect, increased Hct might allow prolonged dive duration and sustained aerobic metabolism even during the longest dives [14].
Our study albatrosses dived infrequently (1.5 dives/d at sea, on average), and only a total of 14 dives (>0.5 m) were recorded (6, 5, and 3 dives per bird).
Additionally, the total number of dives were used to calculate dive rate (dives h−1) averaged over the foraging trip.
In total, 263 dives (Table 1) were investigated (from one to six dives per subject).
