Fontenot and other hackathon organizers are acutely aware of such concerns, and have actively worked to broaden the base of students in engaging in CS. "As you get bigger, you get more diverse," he notes.
And though California is often celebrated as the crucible of trends, and other big states like Texas, Florida, New York and Illinois are on the road to becoming similarly diverse, demographers note that the nation will not catch up to California's diversity until midcentury, and even then small, interior states may remain disproportionately white.
Ruth Jurgensen, the principal of the diverse school, noted that many students were alarmed about dwindling college aid.
Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt SF in September, Fitbit CEO and co-founder James Park described the health and fitness category as "a pretty large and diverse opportunity", noting that consumers spend over $200 billion on related products and services — and arguing that Fitbit's kit does not significantly overlap with Apple's wearables play here.

GH regulates several metabolic processes in cells and differentiated tissues, including cell growth and proliferation; pituitary, prostate, and adrenal gland sizes; and the size of accessory reproductive organs (Cohen and Radovick 2002; Mogi et al. 2005; Stoker et al. 2002), which may explain the diverse effects noted in previous studies.
"The problem is that the people who attend these diversity talks are the diverse people," Martin notes.
One of the University of Arizona's strengths is that is can draw on "a huge, diverse patient population," notes center co-leader Elizabeth Calhoun.
"They're diverse," he said, noting that the lines come from research in five countries.
