(b, c) Azimuthal and radial field-aligned magnetic field components (Yizengaw et al. 2006) Fig. 9 Vector divergence plot showing plasmaspheric duct structure.
proposed for estimating the significance of the observed peaks in the KL divergence plot.
As can be seen from the plots, reordering the data eliminates the linear rise, and the divergence plot is characteristic of stochastic data.
Therefore, to estimate empirically the significance of the peaks found in the KL divergence plot we carried out simulations using Seq-Gen [ 30].
For a stochastic time series the divergence plot is flat and the Lyapunov exponent is zero, and for a non-chaotic time series in which trajectories converge, the exponent is negative.
The increase of the Lyapunov exponent for the scleral lens case indicates that the fluctuations in tear film may be a source of noise that 'dilutes' the chaos, as a flat divergence plot indicates noise.

Figure 12(b) shows the divergence plots.
The effect of noise is to shorten the length of time of the linear rising region in the divergence plots [ 21], and also eventually flatten the divergence plots.
Divergence plots were then obtained by comparing these distances with Hamming, Jaccard and Dice distances calculated from AFLP profiles.
Hence we were comparing the effect of the tear film breaking up. Figure 10(b) shows the corresponding divergence plots.
The divergence plots for nuclear DNA sequences and AFLP profiles indicate that the AFLP-derived distances have limited tree-like properties.
