Today, a senior Russian military official disputed a second complaint, from one of the British divers, that his team had been barred from using a sophisticated minisubmarine specifically designed for undersea rescues.
Then, on Tuesday morning, members of an F.B.I. team — divers who had searched for wreckage from the explosion of the space shuttle Columbia in 2003 and the collapse of an interstate highway bridge in Minnesota in 2007 — put a different type of sonar device to work.
