The area is noted for fishing and hunting; deer, bears, raccoons, and opossums are plentiful, especially in the nearly inaccessible Coldwater Ditch area.
Testate communities in the inter-ditch areas changed markedly over time and between treatments illustrating the potential of this group of organisms as indicators of blanket peatland restoration status.
"We have found some of these stations very close to the water and one of these stations apparently was in the water," Dr. Leatherman said, speaking of a piece of foundation recently found in the Ditch Plains area east of Amagansett.
