Wodeham's position is distinctive because he denies what was a traditional distinction for Scotus and Ockham, namely, a distinction between the sensitive and intellective soul (a real distinction in the case of Ockham and a formal distinction in the case of Scotus).
The foundation of this distinction in the case of categories must be sufficient to allow relations or modes of denomination of primary substance that are irreducible to one generic concept (DM 39, 2, 23; 1861, 25:517a).
For example, there is a proper formal distinction in the case of the two properties of being-capable-of-laughing (risibile) and of being-capable-of-learning (disciplinabile), which are connected forms instantiated by the same set of individual substances (In Metaph., book V, tr. 2, chap. 3, fol. 185rb).
There is, for example, a stark difference between the images of the hanging of Saddam Hussein that were screened by mainstream western broadcasters and the images available online, and a similar distinction applies in the case of film of hostage murders released by terrorist organisations.
The most serious difficulties with this argument are (1) whether we should grant the "no distinction" premise in the case of the particular sensory qualities invoked by Berkeley (why not suppose that I can distinguish between the heat and the pain?) and (2) if we do, whether we should generalize to all sensory qualities as Berkeley would have us do.
Thematically, we can point out that like several of the other theses, it attempts to collapse a distinction, in this case between the finite and infinite.
The distinction in this case, critics say, is that a product that was marketed to customers as a convenience is now being used against them.
