Cognitive approaches to anxiety and depression are underpinned by the proposal that each condition is associated with a relatively distinct pattern of alterations in information processing (Mineka, Rafaeli, & Yovel, 2003), the identification and normalization of which are central to effective differential diagnosis and intervention (e.g. Clark, Beck, & Alford, 1999; Segal et al., 2006).
