In these states, voters are wrestling with local issues like education, energy, wages and unemployment -- all of which echo only distantly the concerns about terrorism and war that dominate the presidential contest.
This de-differentiation reaches some clear limits when distantly related subspecies like M. m. domesticus and M. m. musculus are concerned since their contact amounts to hybrid zones with restricted gene flow (see for instance [ 36] and the literature cited therein), but is not so clear what happens between the four non- domesticus entities considered here.
