The electrochemical oxidation of dissolved aluminium was studied in alumina saturated cryolitic melts at 1000°C by linear sweep voltammetry and chronopotentiometric measurements.
The experiments performed include: (i) recording and analysis of the main electrical characteristics of the process; (ii) determination of the oxide layer thickness; (iii) anodic gas collection and composition analysis and (iv) electrolyte analysis to determine dissolved aluminium.
It is shown by voltammetry that the species often called "dissolved aluminium" which comes from the interaction of aluminium with molten cryolite is electrochemically oxidized at several electrodes (platinum, nickel, copper, graphite, vitrous carbon).

The authors also recorded higher dissolved aluminium concentrations, and lower pH than streams draining indigenous forest catchments, lower aquatic invertebrate taxa richness in some very acidic streams and an increase in annual sediment yields.
The dissolved aluminium concentrations are close to saturation with respect to gibbsite, (A1(OH)3) and not 7 Å chlorite (micaceous clay) which was identified in the X-ray diffraction analysis of the sediments.
