We demonstrate that conscious access to the sequence of target locations and responses that coincide with structure of the target sequence are dispensable features when learning higher-order visuospatial associations.
These relict organelles suggest mitochondria are resistant to outright loss, raising questions about why mitochondria appear to be one of the more dispensable features of algae taken up during secondary and tertiary endosymbiosis events.

In our view, the pol γ-α sequences we retrieved for nematodes do represent the mitochondrial replicase, and the successful development of C. elegans with a substantially lower level of both pol γ-α and mtDNA most likely indicates that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation is the feature dispensable for egg and larval viability in this organism.
In this study, we generated genome sequences of 57 S. mutans isolates, as well as representative strains of the most closely related species to S. mutans (Streptococcus ratti, Streptococcus macaccae, Streptococcus criceti), to identify the overall structure and potential adaptive features of the dispensable and core components of the genome.
ACSL4 knockdown by siRNAs in hippocampal neurons indicated that this protein is largely dispensable for these cells' gross architectural features (i.e. axonal and dendritic formation and final length) yet it is required for the presence of normal spines.
These findings are supported by their common genomic features and uncommon gene repertoires, including dispensable genes, phages and an additional putative pathogenomic island harbouring virulence-related genes, and zot in particular.
Another interesting feature is the evidence that the dispensable genome, and especially unique genes fractions, is mainly distributed in clusters (blue and green zones, respectively).
Experiments utilising these constructs showed that the entire domain organisation of CD317 is critical for its capacity to organise membrane microdomains, with no single feature of CD317 being either sufficient or dispensable for this function (Billcliff et al., 2013).
This observation suggests that the SAM domain, a unique feature of p63 and p73 but not p53, is dispensable for the epidermal cell fate and stratification inducing properties of p63 – a finding that is further substantiated by the lung squamous metaplasia phenotype of the SpC-ΔNp63β transgenic animals.
This last feature could be interpreted as the U box being dispensable for UIP5 acting as a ubiquitin ligase.
The book articulates a gloomy presentiment of this future and its embrace of "the mistaken impression," as one essayist puts it, "that people are the permanent feature while the natural world is mutable, shrinkable and ultimately dispensable".
