In 2006, he returned to MIT as lead physics lecturer in the Concourse Program and faculty director of academic programs in the Office of Minority Education.
Research has shown that the most successful company-run volunteer programs allow employees to select the causes they support, said Dr. Dwight Burlingame, who is director of academic programs for Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeannette Scholer, who recently retired as director of academic programs at Fuller; two daughters, Abigail Scholer Strazzabosco and Emily Scholer Hernandez; and three grandchildren.
