"Fraudsters have shifted their attention to current accounts in recent times and are using these almost as a trojan horse into the bank," said Nick Mothershaw, UK&I director of identity and fraud at Experian.
The Irn-Bru recipe is known by only three people in the world – former chairman Robin Barr, his daughter and company secretary, Julie Barr, and one other AG Barr board director whose identity remains confidential.
"I don't think we'll ever be able to guarantee this won't happen again, but this greatly enhances our chances of preventing it or catching it in the process," said Monte Hawkins, the director for identity management and biometrics policy at the National Security Council.
Nick Mothershaw, UK director of identity and fraud at Experian, said: "A decline in current account fraud is a positive step for the financial services industry as current account fraud is often the first step for fraudsters who later plan mortgage, loan or credit card deception.
"The figures released today emphasise just how much of a threat fraud still is to lenders and their customers, especially as more people apply for financial products across multiple channels, including online and mobile," said Nick Mothershaw, director of identity and fraud at Experian.
As Ian Glazer, senior director of identity at Salesforce put it in his humorous but pointed keynote, not adhering to standards was akin to running a toxic waste dump.
Even so, convincing users to adopt new technology for preventing ID theft even as simple as keying in a code from their cellphone won't be easy, especially when the brunt of the crime's losses fall on banks and merchants rather than consumers, admits Marc Gaffan, RSA's Director of Identity Access and Assurance.
