This production gives Simon's play the star treatment — it has a generous supply of top-drawer character actors, Jerry Zaks as its director, and a set by John Lee Beatty that replicates the original in a way that will make you beam in appreciation — and one would wish for no less for Simon, who has devoted a lifetime to entertaining us.
But Mr. Gurney; the director, David Saint; and the set by James Youmans, which isolates Platt's office in a nest of empty platforms and stairways, have all indulged Platt's myopia, keeping this context at arm's length.
So it's right in many ways that Phèdre - the last play Racine wrote before returning to the fundamentalist Jansenist sect - should be set by director Graham McLaren in the nave of a cathedral.
