"In a way, this issue about the difference in survival of transported fish versus fish that migrate through the river is a red herring," said Rob Masonis, regional director of hydropower programs for American Rivers, a conservation group.
"The governor is providing what the Snake River salmon need most right now, and that is political leadership," said Rob Masonis, regional director of dam programs for American Rivers, a group that favors dam removal on many of the nation's rivers.
"This is not a matter of one pipe dumping sewage into the river," said Philip Musegaas, director of Hudson River programs for Riverkeeper.
"We'll have to be corporate to fit in with the park," said Cathy Drew, founder and director of the River Project, a nonprofit river ecology program.
Chrissy Word, the group's director of public programs, said most of the students had never stepped foot in the river before helping to monitor and track the growth of oysters there.
