In 1999 Joseph DePaolo, then managing director of consumer banking at Republic National Bank, fidgeted in his office chair while a senior officer of HSBC, the British giant that had just bought Republic, gazed out DePaolo's window.
Meanwhile, in July, in the wake of the scandal, Carrie Tolstedt, Wells Fargo's director of consumer banking, the operation that opened fake accounts, abruptly left the bank where she worked for 27 years.
The bank named David Coulter, head of consumer banking, to lead the investment bank.
The Commercial Banking segment consists of consumer banking unit, middle market banking unit, corporate banking unit, international banking unit, and treasury unit.
"I think if you interview 100 consumers, you'll find 100 consumers who've never heard of it," said John Gould, director of consumer lending and bank cards for the TowerGroup, a research company based in Needham, Mass., that was acquired recently by MasterCard.
"The video shows people could use more information and feel overdraft fees should be more in line with banks' actual costs," Susan Weinstock, director of Pew's consumer banking project, said in an emailed statement to The Huffington Post.
But Richard Lloyd, executive director of consumer group Which?, said: "The banks should be proactively contacting their customers and making sure it is as easy as possible for those with a legitimate claim to get their money back, without any hassle".
Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said: "The banks are being forced to write-off vast sums and, as a result, they are tightening their lending belts.
Jean Ann Fox, director of consumer protection for the Consumer Federation of America, said that bank accounts remained consumers' least expensive and most secure option.
Also, not everyone may qualify for the loan: an average borrower has a high net income, a better-than-average credit score and is usually required to put down a higher down payment, according to David Herpers, director of consumer affairs for Amerisave Mortgage, an online bank.
"We look at those big pots of money and we know where it came from: low- to moderate-income workers who are writing checks each week without money in the bank," said Jean Ann Fox, the Consumer Federation of America's director of consumer protection.
