"The scan was floridly positive," said her doctor, Adam S. Fleisher, director of brain imaging at the Banner Alzheimer's Institute in Phoenix.
"It is a genetic disease, and it's not hard to imagine that your gene results in some differences in the way your brain is formed," said Dr. Adam Fleisher, director of brain imaging at the Banner Institute and an author of the studies.
When buyers choose a brand they really care about, neural activity suggests that they are making an emotional choice based on past experience, says Steven P.R. Rose, a professor of biology and director of brain and behavior research at the university.
"He saw that the Vietnam War was heating up, and he wanted to study some American combat veterans who suffered penetrating brain injuries and survived," said Jordan Grafman, the director of brain-injury research at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
"Teaching is an ancient craft, and yet we really have had no idea how it affected the developing brain," said Kurt Fischer, director of the Mind, Brain and Education program at Harvard.
The executive director of the brain and mind research institute at the University of Sydney, Professor Ian Hickie, said social isolation was perhaps the most important factor contributing to male suicide attempts.
Recent findings point to specific parts of the brain that may be involved, said Dr. Vilayanur Ramachandran, director of the Brain and Perception Laboratory at Cal-San Diego and co-author of the paper with Mr. Hubbard.
"I don't know that he'll be doing halfpipes, because we don't want him to hit his head," said Dr. Alan Weintraub, medical director of the brain injury program at Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo.

Severe and even some moderate traumatic brain injuries are usually obvious and easy to detect, said Dr. Felise S. Zollman, medical director of the brain injury program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which will help the state carry out the new program.
Either way, brain injury produces an "utter quagmire" of specific disruptions in brain functioning that doctors have only blunt tools to fix, said Dr. Jonathan Fellus, director of the brain injury program at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, N.J.
