A basic computation of the cross-correlation in the spatial domain requires a number of operations proportional to N2, whereas with an implementation in the spectral domain, it is proportional to N log N. A speedup of the process is expected when the window size increases, with the constraint of being a power of 2 in both directions to benefit from the FFT optimizations.
On top of this, a direction set optimization method, coupled to the intelligent use of some physical insight into the system, is used to iterate on the kinetic parameter values until the computed particle size distribution best fits the experimental one.
We use the alternating direction optimization (ADO) to get the solution to the optimization problem.
