To put forward that vision of what we know is right: healthcare for all, education for all, good-paying jobs that give us all dignity of self, environmental justice, workers rights, immigration reform, criminal justice reform, civil rights, democracy reform, equal treatment for all regardless of any identification, living wages and retirement security.
It may be divided into two types: dignity-of-self and dignity-in-relation.
Dignity-of-self is a quality of self-respect and self-worth that is identified with characteristics like confidence and integrity and a demeanor described as dignified.
These objects correspond to human dignity (the people and humanity), dignity-of-self (the self, the body, moral agency, and personhood), and dignity-in-relation (autonomy, status, and citizenship).
One participant described dignity-of-self as vulnerable to damage–" [people's dignity is] there, but they may not...they may have been shot down so much that they don't believe that" – but human dignity as enduring – "it's there for everybody, it's just how you access it".
Dignity-of-self was reflected in remarks like: "dignity is the positive feelings that I have for myself"; "respect, self-esteem, sense of self, self-worth...trust, valuing self, honoring yourself"; "you've got your self-respect, you've got your values, you've got your dignity".
The cause of our conflict with the Israelis is their desire to make of us a servile minority or an emigrant memory and they have done nothing that would grant us the dignity of self-determination.
In the opening poem of the collection, "The Better Condensed," we find the search for inarguable denotation--for, as it were, the symmetrical word, the word that perfectly corresponds to our experience--a harrowing and perhaps impossible one, no less fraught with dangers to the dignity of the self than was alchemy in the time of Newton.
