Immunostained cells were mounted under coverslips in Aquamount (BDH, Poole, UK) and (except where stated,) photographed using a Zeiss Axioplan microscope with an ×40 objective (numerical aperture 0.75) and Axiovision 4.6 digital acquisition software (Carl Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany).
The output of the potentiostat was connected to an analogue/digital converter (Experiment 1: Powerlab 8/30, AD Instruments, Oxon, UK; Experiment 2: Micro 1401; CED) and then onto a PC running digital acquisition software (Experiment 1: Chart v5, AD Instruments; Experiment 2: Spike2; CED).

Photographs were made using Olympus BX41 clinical microscope and Olympus DP20 digital camera using cell acquisition software.
The images were captured by an OLYMPUS BX 51 fluorescence microscope (Center Valley, PA, USA), which is fitted with a triple DAPI/FITC/TRITC cube, a DP70 digital camera and image acquisition software.
Image acquisition was done using the Nikon digital camera DXM1200 and the acquisition software Nikon ACT-1.
Images were acquired in bright field using a Nikon DMX 1200 digital camera and ACT-1 acquisition software (Nikon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan).
