At a broader level, this finding corroborates the notion that strategic effects, such as focusing attention primarily on the unit digits, influences multi-digit number processing.
The participant's scores on the Moray House Test (verbal reasoning; age 11, 70 and 76), Wechsler Logical Memory (verbal declarative memory; age 70, 73, and 76), and Wechsler Digit Symbol (processing speed; age 70, 73 and 76) were between 0.5 and 1.0 standard deviations (SD) higher than their LBC1936 contemporaries at age 11 or 70, but only between 0 and 0.5 SD higher at age 76.
Yet, it must be noted that the results also indicate that findings from two-digit number processing cannot simply be generalized to the three-digit number range.
Furthermore, studies on two-digit number processing have shown that participants may not be able to compare the magnitude of decade digits while ignoring the unit digits, even when the units are totally irrelevant for the task at hand [see [ 5, 14, 15] for a review, [ 16, 17]].
The development of two-digit number processing in children, and in particular the influence of place-value understanding, has recently received increasing research interest.
Thereby, the current data are the first to provide clear evidence for impairments in multi-digit number processing due to symptoms of object-based neglect.
In turn, unimpaired access to the units should then exert a stronger influence on two-digit number processing, resulting in a more pronounced compatibility effect.
For this reason, presenting digits of a two-digit number separately from each other would possibly lead to activation of separate magnitudes [ 17, 19] and cannot be considered as a valid test about two-digit number processing.
