GVHD was validated by histology in haematoxylin and eosin sections of the ear and liver according to: 0 – no infiltration, 1 – scarce infiltrates, 2 – patchy infiltration and 3 – diffuse infiltration with deterioration of tissue structure.
HRCT revealed the deterioration of diffuse ground-glass opacification.
Specifically, an increase of the marrow fat that decreases the interstitial space size in which water diffuse and a microstructural deterioration with a pore enlargement that increases the interstitial space size and their interconnection occur [ 43].
History-taking disclosed ATL disease with diffuse exfoliative dermatitis followed by a rapid deterioration of the patient's general condition, high white blood cell (WBC) count (total WBCs: 54,070/mm), a high number of lymphocytes (35,684/mm), severe hypercalcemia (12.7 mEq/L; normal values: 4.2 5.2 mEq/L) and elevated LDH plasma values (5,630 U/L; normal values: 230 450 U/L).
In IPF, N-acetylcysteine added to a regimen of prednisone and azathioprine slowed deterioration of the FVC and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide at 12 months [ 67].
Acute (2 days) deterioration of the NFs was more diffuse, probably due to focal oedema of the operated site, but it was decreased 5 days later (data not shown).
The direct trauma caused by the forceps when gripping the ILM may not be the main cause of all these microscotomas, because first, operations were performed by experienced surgeons (RT, AG, PM) accustomed to exercise caution when peeling off the ILM, and second, because the deterioration in retinal sensitivity was too diffuse to be explained by a direct retinal trauma.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was defined when clinical deterioration was associated with chest radiographs showing diffuse bilateral infiltrates accompanied by severe arterial hypoxemia.
Although BS could be alleviated by mannitol infusion even without craniotomy, a subset of patients with malignant BS after TBI could not be easily manageable, and diffuse unilateral or bilateral BS has definitive correlation with clinical deterioration with brain herniation [ 5, 13- 17].
The rates of ER visits and the proportion of subjects with ER visits in the Control group were comparable to the BT group during Years 1, 2, and 3. Longer-term safety of BT is supported further by our findings of no deterioration in measurements of static and dynamic lung volumes or diffusing capacity over the 5 years post-treatment.
