Modesty is the most difficult virtue for intellectuals to learn, but it is the most important one in democratic society.
Within Western monotheistic and philosophical traditions forgiveness has often been regarded as a "high" and "difficult" virtue (Scarre, 2004), and its opposite, unwillingness to forgive, as a vice.
