On a pretest they were, on average, only able to detect regions that differed in compliance by at least 40%; following eight practice sessions of the VHB they were able to detect regions that differed in compliance by as little as 11%.
Optimal regional compliance differed at different PEEP levels: 10 and 5 cm H2O at the cranial level and 15 and 10 cm H2O at the caudal level for the dependent and nondependent lung regions, respectively.
