The CCS includes both electrostatic analyzers to measure the particle environment and surface potential monitors to track differential charging between various materials and vehicle ground.
As has been widely reported, the influences of differential charging on the band offsets determination cannot be neglected even in very thin oxides.
In order to avoid differential charging effect, during the measurement, the spectra were taken after a few minutes of X-ray irradiation.
The layer thickness dependence in peak positions is mainly derived from the differential charging effects, and true peak positions are obtained by extrapolating the measured binding energies to zero oxide thickness and ideally to zero charge.
