Tequila vs. Mezcal While only blue agave is used for tequila, there are more than a couple dozen different types of agave plants that can be fermented and distilled to make Mezcal, essentially the same thing as tequila and, many would argue, of higher quality (except for the ones with a worm in the bottle that's just a gimmick).
