**If different types of MC at two or more levels, classification is based on the assumed severity of the type, i.e. Type I > mixed Type I/II > Type II.
Three different types of MC have been described; Type I (M1) lesions, considered to be the earliest and the most active stage in the process of MC evolution, are associated with vascular granulation tissue within the subchondral bone, whereas Type II (M2) lesions reflect fatty replacement of the red bone marrow [ 1].
Given the different vascular characteristics of MCs, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the contrast enhancement of MCs on T1-weighted images, hypothesising differences among the different types of MCs, by means of a semi-quantitative analysis.
Obviously, this is important, if various stages of MCs require different types of treatments.
