The idea of a factorial design is to arrange experiments in such a way that the variation in response obtained with different settings of the experimental variables (factors) can be traced back to the variations of the factors.
Register variation is semantic variation — that is, variation in the deployment of the meaning potential of a language; but it is variation that correlates with different settings of the contextual variables of field, tenor and mode, so when we map out the patterns of semantic variation, we do so in relation to context.
