Copulation success depends on the phenotypic differences between mating partners, the criteria of which are described later.
The significance of differences between mating classes was determined from germination/non-germination frequencies using Fisher Exact tests.
The key differences of our model are that mating within patches can be non-random with respect to the recognition locus, and individuals are diploid not haploid, facilitating investigation of the consequences of heterozygosity differences between mating systems.

There was no difference between mating treatments with respect to female lifetime fecundity, mean egg weight, the total mass of eggs produced, or egg-laying rate (Table 1, Fig 2).
Since our results indicate a hormonal difference between mating and insemination, either intrauterinally or conventionally, the reproductive outcome could be affected by the service technique, as it was shown by Tummaruk et al. [ 40] with data from almost 7000 sows that naturally mated sows had 0.3 more piglets born alive per litter than AI sows.
Our results on transcript abundance of pheromone precursor genes showed that transcript levels of hpp1 in the absence of a mating partner are higher in MAT1-2 and those of ppg1 are higher in MAT1-1, albeithehe difference between mating types is more extensive for hpp1 (Fig. 5A and B).
