Yet Dr. Birkmeyer's study finds that fully a third of patients have the operation at hospitals doing four or fewer such surgeries in a year.
When he was busiest, in the nineteen-eighties, he would routinely do seven or eight brain surgeries in a row, starting at dawn and ending at dusk, lining up patients in adjoining operating rooms and striding from one to the other like a conquering general.
Neither did three knee surgeries.
Kelley tried to avoid surgery and did six weeks of physical therapy and ice treatments.
"You could spend 30 minutes in the operation just burning and zapping and get paid the same amount if you did nine hours doing a meticulous surgery," said Guidone.
In one of these studies, 22 three of eight domains (physical role, general health, and vitality) improved more after bariatric surgery, as did five of eight domains in the other study (physical function, physical role, general health, energy, and emotional role).
