Yet Dick's life continues to obtrude massively into any assessment of his work.
Dick's life has long passed into legend, peppered with florid tales of madness and intoxication.
While there were stretches of Dick's life in which he had roommates, a series of girlfriends or a tight group of male friends, the Point Reyes years were his most domestic.
In fact, Robert S. Pirie, a former partner at Skadden, Arps and an investment banker at Rothschild Inc. who has been friends with Mr. Cheney for 30 years, said, "I never knew of that aspect of Dick's life till long afterwards".
But by putting Dick's life into human terms, Ms. Dick offers a window through which the curious — from the general reader to the fan boy — can approach this often inscrutable author, whose audience and critical standing have increased significantly in recent years.
"Gospel" presents the events in Dick's life without much insight; perhaps the director, Mark Steensland, and producer, Andy Massagli, realized it would be better to do that than try to analyze the writer's library-sized sheaf of novels and short stories.
"As impossible as it might seem," he writes, "I sometimes felt as if I was seeing the art of 'Moby-Dick' in life".
Electric Dreams aims to build on that momentum, bringing other Dick works to life on screen.
I sucked that dick like my life depended on it because, in a way, it did.
