All sequences were manually edited and assessed for deviant base composition.
We then measured MMN to the same deviants in a linked sequence where deviants were paired duration deviants followed an intensity change and spatial deviants followed a frequency change.
These deviant sequences (but not the majority of the sequences with the same species annotation) were excluded from the analysis of intra- and interspecific similarity.
Sequences containing deviant instruments were excluded from further analysis (because they were only employed to devise a task for the subjects, see also above).
Using MITOMASTER, each patient mtDNA sequence was compared with the rCRS and all deviant nucleotides identified.
The stimuli were presented in three 5 min sequences, and each sequence was of 300 stimuli in which the deviant occurred among standards in a pseudorandom fashion, with the constraint that at least two standards were presented between any two deviants.
Across the experiment, each sequence was presented 10 times (two of which contained a chord played by a deviant instrument), resulting in 480 sequences in total.
As examples, two sequences with a deviant instrument were presented before the start of the experiment.
Deviant branches were analysed and the corresponding sequences checked for false positives by looking for GPCR specific signatures or through Interproscan searches.
All samples with deviant dHPLC patters were re-sequenced.
The standard and deviant sounds were either sinusoidal tones or musical chords, in separate stimulus sequences.
