As I left my job last year, I started re-learning programming, trying to "modernize" my skillset in the Red Queen fashion.
Having grown up in a community of liberal arts colleges (Claremont Colleges in Claremont, Calif). and after attending a large public university (UC Berkeley), I wanted to attend a smaller school with top-notch graduate programs that allowed me to further develop my knowledge and skillset in energy and the environment.
With a liberal arts background, I needed to develop my financial and analytical skillset to make this move and felt the best way to do so was to get an MBA.

I simply saw problems I wanted to solve, developed unique solutions based on my skillset and experience, and went for it.
This is a particularly useful way of gaining more knowledge and developing your skillset without having to leave your company.
And if you can get a computer to do the same thing for an airplane or for anything, developing that skillset isn't necessary.
Courses in effective communications and team development, among others, assisted our managers in further developing their skillsets.
These trainees could have spent those 5+ years developing other skillsets on the side, which would have ensured a viable back-up plan when it came time to apply for jobs.
Instead, what I discovered was that following my passion and my diverse interests helped me develop an eclectic skillset that has made me uniquely qualified for my current leadership position.
