Joining colleagues from the Global North who also call for more comprehensively concentrating on systemic power relations (e.g. [ 2- 4]), researchers from the Global South have been arguing for shifting our attention to social processes (e.g. [ 16]), and indeed shifting our language from "social determinants" to the processes of the "social determination" of health [SDnH] ([ 17- 20]).
Our point, however, is that the language of social determinants (especially in its simplistic form, with limited differentiation made between immediate and structural determinants) lends itself to research that is more reductionist and hence beckons the development of different skills than would be applied by those who adopt the language of social determination.
This is what seems to be the point of the Whorfian hypothesis: there are very different ways we may describe and be in the world we inhabit jointly, but experience differently because of our language and cultural determinants, and thus describe in ways that may not be altogether intertranslatable with a language that molded different experiences for its speakers.
These data show that important social determinants such as race, ethnicity, language, and social class that have been found to influence health outcomes are also strongly linked to health communication behaviors such as cancer information seeking, attention to health in the media, and trust in cancer information from communication sources.
