Much of the political news was dominated by stories regarding the general election and the discontinuation of Australia's offshore refugee detention and processing center, hosted on the island of Manus.
In a statement to the Bali Process ministerial meeting last week, Nauru's justice minister, David Adeang, defended the detention and processing system in place: "We consider [the refugee determination system] to be world-class, incorporating all the elements which are recommended by UNHCR, including a sound legislative base, legal advice for asylum seekers, and merits and judicial review steps".
Families may be separated in detention or processing centers, especially if there are male family members; only one family detention center accepts men, and the processing centers where families arrive first are segregated by gender.
Young has been outspoken on the psychological damage among asylum seekers within the Australian detention and processing system.
Australia's policies of mandatory detention, offshore processing and regional resettlement were criticised in 2015 by United Nations experts, foreign governments, Australian government-funded inquiries and the federal parliament.
But Burke said if asylum seeker arrivals exceeded PNG's capacity to accommodate them, then more detention and processing centres would be built.
"This is yet again an example of the lack of transparency and accountability and openness of this government to offshore detention and processing," Neumann said.
Dutton acknowledged there had been what he termed "issues in our strained detention and processing networks" – but he repeated his regular criticism of refugee advocates.
