Although listeners may sometimes use changes in distance to estimate speed, there is also good evidence for the direct detection of auditory speed (Carlile & Best, 2002; Freeman et al., 2014; Locke, Leung, & Carlile, 2016; Warren, Zielinski, Green, Rauschecker, & Griffiths, 2002).
Although the use of 1-second or 5-second analysis intervals had no meaningful effect on the distance covered or the mean speed reached, it did have a significant bearing on the detection of peak speed.
Errors in the detection of peak speed leads to even greater errors when determining the time spent and distance covered in speed zones relative to peak speed.
