Thanks to the efficient algorithm termed PELT [ 14], human WGBS data can be analysed within 20 min with a single thread of processor: our implementation of changepoint detection was competitive enough or even superior to other approaches for methylome segmentation (Additional file 8).

The accurate changepoint detection of different signal segments is a frequent challenge in a wide range of applications.

Changepoint detection would be also useful for the detection of DMRs.
